India is participating in the international exercise Sea Dragon in the Western Pacific at Guam, along with its Quad Security Dialogue partners Canada and South Korea.

The exercise will include more than 270 hours of in-flight training and operations ranging from monitoring simulated targets to tracking a US Navy submarine. It will be largely focused on anti-submarine warfare (ASW) training. Each event will be rated, and the country with the greatest overall score will be awarded the Dragon Belt.

The Indian Navy, the US Navy, the Royal Australian Air Force, the Royal Canadian Air Force, Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force, and the South Korean Navy are all participating in the exercise, which is being hosted at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam.

The US Navy’s P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft are taking part in the exercise. The US Pacific Fleet stated in a statement that during classroom training sessions, pilots and flight officers from various countries would construct plans and debate strategies, including their country’s capabilities and equipment.

As [officer-in-charge], I am looking forward to expanding our connections with Australia, Canada, India, Japan, and Korea while at Sea Dragon 2022,” said Lt Cmdr Braz Kennedy, officer-in-charge of Patrol Squadron 47’s US detachment.

Last year’s Dragon Belt was won by the Royal Canadian Air Force, and it will be defended at Sea Dragon 2022.

Cmdr Tomoyuki Michiyama, commanding commander of Flight Division 31 of Air Patrol Squadron 3 of Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force, stated, “This exercise is an annual, multi-national, high-end ASW training exercise.”

“I think we will be able to strengthen our tactical abilities by undertaking a broad variety of training, from classroom instruction on the land to real training targeting a submarine.” We also intend to increase collaboration and develop mutual understanding among the participating ships and air forces via training, exchange of viewpoints, and different sorts of exchanges. ”

Within the US Pacific Fleet’s area of operations, the P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft will undertake maritime patrols, reconnaissance, and theatre outreach activities.
