The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has authorised a test kit to identify the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus’s Omicron variant. Tata Medical and Diagnostics is the company that makes the kit. Tata has created a COVID kit called “OmiSure” that will improve the identification of the Omicron variant.

“The tests were carried out according to the manufacturer’s specifications. According to an ICMR approval letter dated December 30, the manufacturer is responsible for batch-to-batch consistency.

According to PTI, citing a senior corporate executive, Tata Medical and Diagnostics has developed a kit called “OmiSure” that can identify the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV2 in nasopharyngeal/oropharyngeal specimens during RT-PCR tests. All standard Real-Time PCR machines are compatible with the test kit.

“This kit can identify the Omicron variant as well as other variants of SARS-CoV2 discovered so far,” Ravi Vasanthapuram, TATA MD’s director of research and development, told PTI. Omicron patients are currently only discovered following genomic sequencing. This test, on the other hand, may assist in removing that step, and detection can be done while testing. ”

This kit’s test run duration is 85 minutes. The total turnaround time for the results is 130 minutes, which includes sample collection and RNA extraction.
