Gujarat has kept its top spot in the second edition of the NITI Aayog’s Export Preparedness Index 2021, with Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana rounding out the top ten.

Delhi led the index among union territories, followed by Goa, Jammu & Kashmir, Chandigarh, and Puducherry, while Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Tripura, Sikkim, and Manipur topped the Himalayan states.

The index is a detailed examination of India’s export successes, published by NITI Aayog in collaboration with the Institute of Competitiveness. The index is designed to compare the performance of states and UTs to that of their peers and to identify issues so that better policy tools may be developed to promote export-led development at the subnational level.

The EPI evaluates states and UTs based on four main pillars: policy, business ecosystem, export ecosystem, and export performance, as well as 11 sub-pillars such as export promotion policy, institutional framework, business environment, infrastructure, transportation connectivity, access to finance, export infrastructure, trade support, R&D infrastructure, export diversification, and growth orientation.

According to the 2021 Index, intra- and inter-regional disparities in export infrastructure, insufficient trade support and growth orientation among states, and a lack of R&D infrastructure to promote complex and distinctive products are the three primary issues facing India’s export promotion.

“The EPI 2021 would go a long way in assisting states and UTs in planning and implementing strong export-oriented policies, creating a conducive export environment, and maximising their export potential,” NITI Aayog vice-chairman Rajiv Kumar said when the index was released on Friday.
