The acquisition of 56 C-295 MW transport aircraft from M/s Airbus Defence and Space S.A., Spain, was authorised by the Cabinet Committee on Security, providing the Indian Air Force a major boost. This is the first project of its type, in which a military aircraft will be built in India using technology transferred from a private business, and it is anticipated to cost around $3 billion.

The C-295MW transport aircraft is a 5-10 tonne transport carrier with a rear ramp door for rapid response and para-dropping of soldiers and goods. The cargo planes will eventually take the place of the IAF’s ageing Avro fleet. The IAF possesses 56 Avros, all of which were purchased in the 1960s and are in desperate need of replacement. The Electronic Warfare Suite will be deployed on all 56 aircraft. The initiative would strengthen India’s aerospace ecosystem by involving many MSMEs from throughout the country in the production of aeroplane parts. The programme, which is in accordance with the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative, would boost local aircraft production, reducing import dependency and boosting exports. The programme will also result in the creation of jobs in the aerospace industry.
